Eventful outing for Phoenix Tools Apico Honda Racing
Gert Krestinov and Carlton Husband were present at the race, plus Ciara Robertson was a guest beneath the awning!
It was immediately evident that both Gert Krestinov and Carlton Husband had the speed to contend at the head of the field, as they ended fourth and seventh in qualifying. The first moto then turned out to be an exhilarating affair, much to the delight of those on the side of the track, as Krestinov started outside of the top ten and ripped up to the cusp of the top five. However, a crash cost him dearly at that point and restricted him to twelfth at the chequered flag.
Krestinov then immediately slotted into second place in the final moto and started to challenge the race leader, a fellow CRF450R rider, but a freak mechanical issue halted his charge. The issue meant that he ended the day in twelfth overall and slipped to ninth in the championship. Krestinov already has his sights set on redemption, however, as the third round of the Michelin MX Nationals will be run at the historic circuit of Hawkstone Park this weekend.
Carlton Husband did not run into the same problems as his teammate and recorded a season-best finish of fifth overall. Husband was seventh in the first encounter, after an impressive ride, and then took advantage of a brilliant start in the second moto to reach the chequered flag in fifth. Thanks to those points, he has jumped to twelfth in the series standings.
Gert Krestinov: “I am feeling more and more comfortable on the bike each time out. In the first race I was coming through but, as I was looking to pass for third by trying a different line, I made a mistake and crashed quite hard, so I just rode the last three laps to get some points. In the second race I got a better start and I was chasing Jake Nicholls, but after ten minutes the bike stopped. On a positive note I had the fastest lap time so that means I was riding okay. Looking for a better day at the next round at Hawkstone Park this weekend.”
